Extra-A Plus & Vegetarian Extra-A: These products contain 25,000 units of vitamin A. The Extra-A Plus has 8,333 IU from each of the following: beta-carotene, fish liver oil and vitamin A palmitate. The Vegetarian Extra-A is a vegetarian formulation that has 12,500 IU of vitamin A from beta-carotene and 12,500 IU of vitamin A palmitate. The beta-carotene is a natural source from mixed carotenoid that also contains alpha-carotene, cryptoxanthein, lutein, zeaxanthin, and lycopene. Vitamin A activity is only claimed for the beta-carotene, but the other carotenoids have other important biological activities, and some are even more powerful antioxidants than beta-carotene. A combination of carotenoids is more natural, since foods contain all of the carotenoids. There is also an extra margin of safety when some of the vitamin A activity is provided in the carotenoid form. Carotenoids are essentially non-toxic, even at high doses. In contrast to pre-formed vitamin A, which is toxic at high doses. Extra-A Plus and Vegetarian Extra-A are both available in bottles of 100 and 250 vegetarian capsules.
